Science and Technology Opportunities
Each of the aspects of the Inunnguat project will require advancements in technology to one extent or another. Some will require advancements in the underlying science. Taking a longer term view, the isolated and cold climate of the Inunnguat cities present opportunities in fundamental research in several areas. Most immediately, climate research would play an important early role. Growing out of that would be materials research, recycling and closed-cycle environmental technologies, and low impact resource extraction and materials processing.
One important area that should not be overlooked is the option of conducting research which may be considered dangerous for a variety of reasons. Biological research, in particular, would be an attractive option in a harsh environment with easy isolation. Nanotechnology or Artificial Intelligence research might also find the isolated locations attractive. Since the population would be voluntary migrants, NIMBY-ism should be a minimal concern.
Once a viable and thriving community exists, many additional options will open for fundamental and applied research and development. Over time the Inunnguat cities will become a desirable location for people longing for a growing and vibrant Canadian frontier.
